Nat Sherman torpedo

Again a cigar that was gifted to me, this time by an American friend who send me a bunch of cigars unavailable to the Dutch market so I could try them. Some of them are hits (like the Casa Fuente, Ashton San Cristobal, Joya de Nicaragua antano machito) and some of them are not like this 165 mm long ring 52 torpedo made in the Dominican republic. Not that this is a bad cigar, but this is no good cigar either, just mediocre and not a keeper in my book.

The wrapper contains a lot of veins and is light of color. The aroma is deep and smells sweet, while the cigar feels soft like there isn’t enough tobacco in it. The predraw is fine and leaves a sweet flavor on the palate. Smoke is full and thick with a dark firm ash.

The flavor of the cigar is tobacco with some coffee and something sour. There isn’t much going on flavor wise, the sour flavor stays consistent. Halfway the strength grows a little and soon a little bitter flavor comes around the corner. Not the turning point bitter though.

Would I buy this cigar again? No

Don Tomas presidente

This 7.5 inch ring 50 churchill has a nice Honduran grown Habano seed wrapper with the color of milkchocolate and a full aroma of grass & hay, a nice yet simple band. The filler is a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobacco. The cigar feels well constructed, no soft or hard spots, the predraw is good and leaves a hint of raisin on my palate.

The cigar releases a sweet woody flavor with some coffee after about 15 mm. Coffee and wood keep rotating but every now and then a sweet flavor get a foot between the door for a while. Halfway the wood flavor becomes stronger and right before the turning point, which comes quite late, the cigar becomes salty, close to salted liquorices.

Smoking this cigar took me 90 minutes, it’s mild to medium bodied and produces quite nice smoke. The ash is firm and the burn is great.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, great cigars for low prices, I want more of those

Gurkha regent robusto

The Gurkha regent robusto is a 112 mm long ring 50 cigar made out of dominican ligero filler with Indonesian binder and a Habana 2000 wrapper. It look quite allright with its dark wrapper but unfortunately there are folds and veins in the wrapper. The construction isn’t very well, the cigar is not consistent and contains soft spots especially at the foot of the cigar. The predraw is light, too easy and the aroma is chocolate.

The flavor is quite bitter, chemical with hints of cedar and ash. There is not much going, it’s a one dimensional cigar. The smoke and burn are good.

Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 machito

People told me that this little 120 mm ring 42 cigar would be a handful even though the size doesn’t scare anybody, a real powerhouse in disguise so I had my hopes up high. The aroma was quite heavy and reminded me of manure, the wrapper is dark, the cigar feels hard without any weak spots and the predraw is quite heavy with a taste of raisin.

The first flavor that is released is a very strong pepper, combined with wood flavors and a little bit of leather on the background. After a short while the wood & leather are replaced by coffee which is soon to be replaced by leather. The pepper drops in strength after about an inch although the flavor is consistent available throughout the whole cigar. At the end there are some hints of cacao with pepper.

The smoke is thick & white and caused my eyes to tear every now and then. The ash is very dark
