Gurkha regent torpedo

A friend gave me this cellophane wrapped Gurkha regent torpedo and even though my not so positive experiences with Gurkha in the past, except for the Master Select that I liked, I thought “well, this might be the one that changes my mind about the brand”. The cigar is a collaboration between K. Hansotia and the Torano family and is made from Honduran tobacco. The cigar recieved high ratings in the past, Cigar Aficionado rated it ’90’.

This 6½x52 torpedo is square, like it has been factory pressed. The wrapper is dark and oily without any veins. The band is like any Gurkha band, huge and flashy. The construction feels fine and the predraw, which leaves a raisin flavor in my mouth, confirms the good construction.

I taste a musty and smooth coffee with some wood and a weird chocolate like flavor. After half an inch the coffee is gone and even the wood tastes a bit weird. There is hardly any flavor development. I taste that weird wood with a hint of chocolate like sweetness and bitterness.
110811gurkharegenttorpedo3
Halfway the wood gets a bit stronger and after two thirds I taste wood with a now normal chocolate flavor. The flavors aren’t great, but much better than before. I even taste some nuts, herbs and a bit of pepper.

This cigar lasted me an hour and fifteen minutes. The draw was great and I got a decent smoke, although it was quite thin and gray in the beginning, but it got better along the way. The light gray ash is firm. This cigar is medium to full flavored and medium bodied. The burn is good.

Would I buy this cigar again? Nah, I gave up on Gurkha after this one

Gurkha beauty

Back in the day when puff.com was still Club Stogie and I was a newbie, I took part in the Newbie Sampler Trade and got paired up with Massphatness. He send me a great sampler and amongst them there were a Gurkha Beauty and a Gurkha Beast. Due to my previous experiences with Gurkha I always skipped those whenever I was browsing my collection, looking for something to smoke, but I could not pass them anymore, I owe it to Vin to smoke these and as always write a review, so I lit up the Gurkha Beast a few days ago, and now it’s time for the 6×52 Beauty.
101115gurkhabeautytoro1
This cigar isn’t as pretty as the Gurkha Beast, the color is pale brown instead of nice and dark. The wrapper has some veins and it’s not oily. The construction feels good and after punching I got a nice predraw. I taste some wood while I smell a mild hay aroma.
101115gurkhabeautytoro2
I taste a sweet, somewhat musty, wood with a spicy aftertaste. The strength of the flavors are medium.
101115gurkhabeautytoro3
After an inch and a half I still taste the same flavors, there is no progress at all. After ⅔ the aftertaste becomes a bit more spicy, but that is the only change in flavors I get.
101115gurkhabeautytoro4
Smoke time is 90 minutes. I got enough smoke that is reasonably thick. The ash is light gray and quite firm. The draw and burn are good. Just like the beast, this cigar is producing a huge flame while purging. This cigar is mild to medium flavored and medium bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? I will have to say no, just like I said with the Beast

Gurkha beast

Back in the day when the ocean was still a jungle and I was a newbie, I took part in the Newbie Sampler Trade and got paired up with Massphatness. The cigar 6×52 looks awesome, I like the Gurkha band and combined with the extra black & silver “BEAST” band and the cedar the looks are great. The wrapper is dark, smooth and oily. Once I release the cigar from the cellophane wrapper I smell a mild acidic straw. The construction feels good but the predraw is a bit on the loose side. The predraw leaves a mild peppery raisin flavor on the palate.
101113gurkhabeasttoro2
I can taste some wood with a hint of chocolate. The flavors are mild. After an inch I also get some straw and the flavors grow a bit in strength. The flavors are a bit musty.
101113gurkhabeasttoro3
Halfway the chocolate gets a bit stronger and becomes the main flavor. The strength of the flavors is now medium. After ⅔ the wood is the main flavor again and less musty. The chocolate is now a supporting flavor. After that the cigar gets more herbal.
101113gurkhabeasttoro4
This cigar lasted me almost 90 minutes and gave me a poor amount of thin smoke. The ash is firm and light colored. The burn is good. There is a lot of nicotine build up in the cigar, I got a huge flame when I purged. This cigar is mild to medium flavored and medium bodied.
101113gurkhabeasttoro5
Would I buy this cigar again? Nah, but then again, I say that about every Gurkha I smoked before so this shouldn’t be a surprise.

Gurkha Legend robusto

I got this Gurkha from a Dutch botl at a herf that I hosted. Now I am not a Gurkha fan, only liked the Master Select so far and didn’t like any other Gurkha I smoked, but I gave it a try, who knows this blend would fit my palate.

The cigar, made from Dominican filler, Cameroon binder with a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper looks nice, but looks are never the problem with Gurkha. The cigar was wrapped in Cellophane and once released from its jacket I could smell a quite strong aroma of wood and barnyard. The wrapper is silky and dark. The construction feels a bit soft. The predraw however, is just like it should be and I can taste raisin.
100317gurkhalegendrobusto2
I can taste some musty wood which burns a little in my mouth. After an inch the musty flavor is gone but I still have a burning sensation on my tongue.

At a third I get a weird chocolate taste which disappeared again soon just to be replaced by a burned coffee flavor. At 2/3rd the burning sensation on my tongue has gone. I can taste some wood with chocolate. Near the end both flavors are replaced by coffee.
100317gurkhalegendrobusto3
I get a reasonable amount of smoke, which is quite thin. The ash is light gray and firm. The draw is good and the burn is ok, I had to correct once.
100317gurkhalegendrobusto4
Would I buy this cigar again? No, Gurkha is one of those brands that doesn’t seem to do it for me.

Gurkha master select robusto

This 6 inch ring 52 robuso is nicely packed in cellophane with a piece of cedar wrapped around the foot of the cigar. The wrapper is dark, oily, smooth and has a bit of a silky feel to it. The construction feels good, the aroma is a deep aroma of hay and the predraw is close to perfect and gives a peppery flavor.
081229gurkhamasterselect2
What do I taste? Wood or leather? Or Both? Guess I taste both but because the flavor is perfectly balanced it is hard to find out what I actually taste. The flavor isn’t strong, I would call this a medium smoke. After an inch I tasted some chocolate and then the cigar is blend for a while, no specific flavor.
081229gurkhamasterselect3
After 2 inch I could taste a sweet leather and some sweet cedar. Midway I noticed the power of the cigar increase a little. The texture is a bit creamy but peppery too, all as a support to the woody flavor. Even though the cigar gained some power it stays medium
081229gurkhamasterselect4
The draw was fine and the smoke was ok. The ash was white and firm, and the burn was pretty straight.

Would I buy this cigar again? Maybe, this is the first Gurkha that I liked.

Gurkha regent robusto

The Gurkha regent robusto is a 112 mm long ring 50 cigar made out of dominican ligero filler with Indonesian binder and a Habana 2000 wrapper. It look quite allright with its dark wrapper but unfortunately there are folds and veins in the wrapper. The construction isn’t very well, the cigar is not consistent and contains soft spots especially at the foot of the cigar. The predraw is light, too easy and the aroma is chocolate.

The flavor is quite bitter, chemical with hints of cedar and ash. There is not much going, it’s a one dimensional cigar. The smoke and burn are good.

Would I buy this cigar again? No
