Padron 1964 Principe natural

The Padron 64th anniversary series was released in 1994 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Padron cigars and they have been scoring very good and consistent in the reviews and ratings of the big magazines. I smoked quite a few Padron 64th anniversary cigars and loved them all, just like the 1926 series. It was time for a review of the natural Principe, a 4½x46 cigar.

The cigar is box pressed with a nice dark wrapper that is wrinkled on the top. I see one thin vein. The construction is great and I smell a mild barnyard smell. The predraw is fine but flavorless.

I taste coffee, mild sweet and smooth, with some nutmeg. After a quarter of an inch I taste herbs and wood. The flavors are complex and smooth. I still taste some of the nutmeg too.

Halfway the structure of the flavors is dry. I taste wood, herbs and a little bit of pepper. After two thirds I taste spices and some spice, the wood and pepper have disappeared.

This smoke time of this cigar is an hour. The draw was a bit easy. I got a lot of extremely thick smoke. The ash is light colored, almost white, and firm. This cigar is medium flavored and medium bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? I love Padron but this cigar was a bit disappointing, I like the bigger sizes better.

Padron 1964 anniversary A

Usually these Padron 1964 anniversary ‘A’ is too rich for my blood, the price tag of those puppies is € 38.00 euro here in The Netherlands but recently I visited the Oliva Cigar Lounge, the cigar shop owned by the importer of Oliva, Fuente, Padron, Don Pepin Garcia and a few others and he showed me a box of these Padron 1964 anniversary ‘A’ with the wrong tax band of € 18,25 so I had to buy one. Now, I might have to explain the Dutch tobacco law a bit otherwise you might think “why didn’t he just correct the price?”. Well, tobacco prices are fixed in The Netherlands. The importer sets a price that includes his mark up and the shops mark up, then he has to add the taxes and that price is printed on a tax band. Once that tax band is placed on the cigar the importer and the shop owner are not allowed to remove the band, so this was bad luck for the importer and good luck for me. As soon as I bought the cigar I knew this would be my birthday smoke, and that was yesterday.

The cigar looks great, the leathery looking wrapper is dark and oily, even the veins on this 8¼x50 box pressed cigar are good looking. The band is tasteful and even has a serial number printed on it, which is created after some counterfeits were found. The construction feels good and the cigar has a mild wood smell. The predraw is great and I taste a mild spicy wood.

I taste wood and coffee, medium strong. After an inch I also taste a mild herbal flavor. The flavors are quite unique, different than any other cigar I’ve smoked. I also taste a mild chocolate. After two inch the flavors consist of a mild creamy, herbal chocolate with some wood. The coffee has gone. The cream gets milder while the herbal flavor grows in strength. The wood is the main flavor without becoming dominant.

Right before I hit the halfway point I also taste something sweet with the mix of herbs and wood. After the halfway point an earthy flavor joins the flavor party in my mouth. The sweetness has disappeared and I get a nut flavor in the aftertaste. Near the end I can also taste some chocolate again.

The smoke time of this giant is two hours and thirty five minutes. I got a decent amount of medium thick white smoke that gets ticker along the way. The draw is great and due to the length the smoke is quite cool in the beginning. The firm as has a salt and pepper color scheme. The burn is great, straight as an arrow. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? For € 18.25 yes, for € 38.00 no.

Padron 1964 Anniversary torpedo

To celebrate their 30 years anniversary Padron released the 1964 series, a limited release with Nicaraguan tobacco from their own farm. They released them with 2 different wrappers, a Nicaraguan maduro and a Nicaraguan Habano.

I decided to light up a torpedo with the Habano wrapper. The wrapper looks awesome, nice & dark, smooth and silky. The size of this baby is 6 x 52. It’s hard to measure the ring size as it is box pressed. The cigar has a barnyard aroma. The predraw is good and leaves a raisin flavor on my lips.

The cigar gives me a nice coffee flavor, quite full of strength and after a centimeter I also get some chocolate and a bit of a metallic flavor far far away in the aftertaste.
100219padron1964annytorpedo3
The chocolate becomes the dominant flavor and grows in strength with just a hint of coffee in the background. This is the flavor that sticks around till somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3rd of the cigar. There the support flavor turns to spices. The chocolate becomes very creamy and gets mixed up with some nut flavors.

This full flavored medium to full bodied cigar wowed me, what a flavors. I also got a lot of medium thick smoke and firm medium gray ash. The draw was good and I have nothing bad to say about the burn. Good quality stick.

Would I buy this cigar again? If I can find them reasonably priced, hell yeah! This is one of the best smokes I ever had.
