La Flor Dominicana Airbender Villano Lancero

My previous employer was, for some time that I worked there, the distributor of La Flor Dominicana and through my work I had the pleasure to meet Litto both in my home country of The Netherlands, in Germany during the Intertabac trade shows and in the United States where Litto went out of his way a few times and cut into his secret family time to meet me for a lunch. That’s where I also met his sons, Litto jr and Antonio, who’s now heavily involved in the business as a blender of the Capitulo, Chapter and La Nox lines
While I was employed with that company La Flor Dominicana released the ‘airbender’ series, some say its named after Litto’s favorite Avatar  cartoon character but according to Litto the name comes from the fact that we bent the air when we smoke.

We carried 3 sizes and once they released the lancero the begging started. Me begging my employer that is. I love lanceros while my previous employer hates them as they are hard to sell. Eventually he caved, ordered 40 boxes, which I all sold. Well, I sold 38 to accounts and bought 2 myself. The cigar is made of Dominican filler and binder, all from the La Flor Dominicana farms wrapped in an Ecuadorean Habano wrapper.

The wrapper is nice and dark, shiny with a leathery look. The construction feels good and the cigar is well made with a nice pigtail to top. There is a mild aroma that smells a bit like an open field early in the morning, right around sunrise when the dew is still lingering. The ring has a black oval in the centre with the curly LFD letters in gold surrounded by golden leaves on a medium brown background. On the bottom is says La Flor Dominicana in white and air bender in golden letters right above an Egyptian looking golden decoration. Next to the LFD logo, on both sides, there are two ninja swords in white and a small golden tobacco leaf. The ring is well printed on good quality paper.

Due to the small ring gauge and the pig tail I have no choice but to cut the cigar and I used my Xikar to do so. The cold draw is perfect and peppery. My trusted Ronson was used to light the cigar. I instantly taste espresso with a little chocolate aftertaste. After a centimeter I taste vanilla, cocoa, pepper and a little lemon. After a third it’s mainly pepper with just a little bit vanilla and some leather with a lemonade aftertaste. Halfway I also taste a little bit of sweetness but the pepper is still very dominant with leather as the main support. The pepper remains dominant but the leather disappears, just like the sweetness. Only the nice citrus flavor remains in the aftertaste. After two thirds I taste a little spice too, cumin to be more precise. Slowly I also taste some wood.

The smoke is thick and full but the ash is quite dark and a bit flaky yet still firm. The draw is perfect. The cigar is full bodied, full flavored and quite well balanced. The burn is sharp. The smoke time is an hour and forty five minutes.
Would I buy this cigar again? It’s no longer available on the dutch market but I still have a box left.

Score: 92

La Flor Dominicana airbender maduro

The La Flor Dominicana airbender, named after the comic that Litto Gomez loves so much, was an instant hit as soon as it was released and now La Flor Dominicana released the La Flor Dominicana Airbender maduro. The blend is the same as the Airbender blend but now with a Brazilian maduro wrapper instead of the habano wrapper that is used for the normal Airbender line. The cigar only comes in one size, a 6½x54 toro. The cigar is also picked to be the cigar that comes with the Casa de Tobacco that La Flor Dominicana released at the IPCPR.

The wrapper is nice and dark, although a bit light for maduro, with some veins and spots. I like the band, which is clearly a La Flor Dominicana band but with a different color. The construction feels good although the cigar looks a bit crooked. I smell a mild sweet wood aroma. The predraw is a bit easy and I taste a mild musty tobacco flavor.
111028lfdairbendermaduro2
I taste a bitter earthy flavor with coffee and after a few puffs I also taste spicy wood and soon some sweetness too. After half an inch I taste sweet herbs and wood. After an inch the sweetness disappears and I taste herbs and wood. After a third I taste wood, herbs and a little bit of cacao. Slowly I start to taste more chocolate.
111028lfdairbendermaduro3
Somewhere between halfway and two thirds I taste nuts, herbs and wood. The aftertaste is peppery and the feeling in my mouth is quite dry. Soon after I taste hay with wood, herbs and a mild acidic flavor.
111028lfdairbendermaduro4
This cigar lasted me for two hours and fifteen minutes. The draw was a bit loose but I got a lot of smoke. The light colored ash is compact and firm and the burn is great. This cigar is full flavored and medium bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, loved it, but I would have been better if it was an inch shorter.

La Flor Dominicana Airbender Guerrero

A friend gave me this La Flor Dominicana Airbender Guerrero. I guess it is named after a comic hero, as the airbender series is a tribute to a comic, but I don’t know anything about comics whatsoever, so I can’t confirm it. From the whole Airbender series only the Matatan is released in The Netherlands so I was happy that I could try another vitola from the line. The Guerrero is a 6¼x54 fat cigar.

I love the band, it looks great on the oily, milk chocolate colored wrapper. The construction feels good and I smell a wood smell. The wrapper has one long thin vein and it looks great. The predraw is a bit easy and tastes like tobacco.
110813laflordominicananaairbendertoro2
I taste wood and an earthy flavor with some herbs. The flavors are mild spicy and I taste some pepper on the background. The earthy flavor slowly disappears after half an inch and after an inch I taste wood, which is mild musty and quite nice. I also taste a mild musty chocolate and a mild bitterness. Now that doesn’t sound good, but it is actually quite nice.
110813laflordominicananaairbendertoro3
Halfway I taste wood, not spicy anymore even though there is still a hint of black pepper in the flavor profile. After that I don’t taste any changes in the flavors anymore.
110813laflordominicananaairbendertoro4
The smoke time of this cigar is two hours. The draw was a bit easy but I got a lot of thick white smoke. I had to correct the burn a few times in the beginning. The silver gray ash is firm. The cigar is full flavored and medium bodied.

La Flor Dominicana airbender chisel

I have a love/hate relationship with La Flor Dominicana, I really love some of their stuff, but there are also some La Flor Dominicanas that don’t do anything for me. I smoked the Airbender matatan before and I liked that one, so I was looking forward to the day that the Airbender (named after the comic) chisel (named after the shape) would be released to the Dutch market and it’s here, for only € 8,00. I love the chisel shape as it is so versatile. You can squeeze it open, punch it or cut it and the shape makes it easy to smoke. I usually squeeze mine open.
110620lfdairbenderchisel1
The airbender chisel has a 54 ring and measures 6½ inch long. The Ecuadorian wrapper is medium brown and oily with a few veins. The construction feels good and after I squeezed the cigar open I get a great predraw which tastes like pepper and raisin. The cigar has a strong barnyard smell.
110620lfdairbenderchisel2
I taste a dry wood with leather. After just a few puffs I also taste some red pepper. After half an inch I taste wood with some nuts and the pepper moved to the aftertaste. After an inch I taste leather with some wood, the flavors are dry and sticky. The wood slowly gets stronger.
110620lfdairbenderchisel3
Just before I reach the middle point of the cigar the nut flavor gets stronger, the leather and herbs are now the background flavors. The flavors are mild creamy. Just past the mid I taste nuts with red pepper. After two thirds the pepper gets stronger without overpowering the other flavors. The nuts are gone, the background now tastes like wood and herbs.
110620lfdairbenderchisel4
This cigar lasted me two hours and thirty-five minutes. The draw is great, but the smoke is quite thin. The light colored ash is very firm. The burn is beautiful. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? Without a doubt.

La Flor Dominicana airbender matatan

The only size of the La Flor Dominicana airbender series that is available on the Dutch market is the 5×50 robusto with the name Matatan. All the cigars in the line have those weird names, I guess they are all named after characters from the Airbender comics. This cellophane wrapped cigar has a price tag of € 7.50 in The Netherlands.

110206laflordominicanaairbenderrobusto1The wrapper is nice, medium dark and oily with a few veins. The construction feels a bit hard and the wrapper is quite thick. I like the band. The predraw is good and I taste tobacco with pepper.
110206laflordominicanaairbenderrobusto2

I taste coffee and an earthy flavor with a hint of dark chocolate and pepper. The aftertaste has a lot of pepper. After half an inch I taste earth, herbs, chocolate and pepper. After an inch the flavors change to toast with some herbs and a bit of wood and chocolate.
110206laflordominicanaairbenderrobusto3

Halfway I taste toast with chocolate and some earth. The wood and herbs are gone. After two thirds the flavors change to toast with wood and herbs. The chocolate has gone and the flavors are quite smooth. The aftertaste is peppery that slowly grows in strength.
110206laflordominicanaairbenderrobusto4

The smoke time of this 5×50 robusto is an hour and forty minutes. The draw was a bit easy, but not so easy that I can complain about it. I got a decent smoke volume and the smoke was quite thick. The ash is a bit frayed, but light colored and firm. The burn was straight as an arrow. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.
