Nosotros robusto

A few years ago Dion Giolito made an impressive entry into the cigar business with the launch of his brand Illusione that got great ratings and became an instant success. Now he teamed up with another young cigar maker Jonathan Drew and together they created the Nosotros, a name that translates to ‘us’. The cigar, with a Nicaraguan filler, Habano binder and a Corojo 99 wrapper comes in 8 different vitolas, Corona, Corona Larga, Robusto, Robusto Larga, Toro, “660”, Torpedo, & Churchill. I got my hands on a few robustos on a groupbuy on my dutch forum.

This 5×50 robusto has a silky and oily Corojo 99 wrapper. The band is simple but nice and mentions the names ‘Dion’ and ‘Drew’ on the side. The construction feels good. The cigar has a firm barnyard smell. The predraw is good and has a taste of raisin and some mild spiciness.

I taste a full earth flavor with some coffee and herbs. After an inch I also taste some wood and some chocolate spread in the aftertaste.

Halfway the chocolate spread is gone, the herbal flavor gets stronger with some earth flavors on the background. The wood has disappeared. After ⅔ I taste some chocolate again while the herbal flavor becomes less strong. Near the nub the herbs grow stronger again.

The smoke time of this cigar is about 75 minutes. I got a good amount of thick white smoke. The light colored ash is very firm. At certain times the burn got crooked but it corrected itself. The cigar is full flavored and medium to full bodied. I got no flame when I purged the cigar.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, I liked this cigar. Dion (with some help from Drew) did it again.

Illusione holy lance

This 7 ½ x 40 lancero is the only Illusione lancero so far, and even though it is a Nicaraguan puro, it is produced in Honduras. The cigar is made from first generation Corojo ‘99 and Criollo ‘98 seeds and has a nice dark and oily Cafe Colorado wrapper. The cigar is a bit oval shaped, not round or box pressed. The construction feels good and the predraw is fine, with a mild spicy flavor. The cigar doesn’t produce a lot of aroma.

I taste a lot of spices, hot & spicy and a little bit of coffee. After about half an inch I also get some cacao as a supporting flavor, very mild and the spices are still the dominant flavors
100212illusioneholylance2
The cacao flavor fades away and leaves room for sweetness. The sweetness fades away in a few puffs and I am left with the full spices that are persistent in staying the dominant flavor. Halfway I get some chocolate and even some coffee to support the spices.

At 2/3rd the spice flavor suddenly drops in strength for just a few puffs and then returns in all its glory and power. The spices get so strong that I get a bit of a burning sensation on my tongue. At the end the cigar gives me a high chocolate boost and then reaches the turning point.
100212illusioneholylance4
I get lots of smoke, the smoke isn’t thick but neither thin too. I had a bit of a crooked burn in the beginning but the burn corrected itself. The ash is light gray and crooked. This is a full flavored stick, medium to full bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? I think so, I like this cigar but I am not a big lancero fan, although the vitola is growing on me a bit.

Illusione culebra

Culebras are very funny looking smokes, 3 cigars strangles together like Siamese triplets. The Illusione culebra is bound together by two pieces of robe, then are about 7 inch long and have a 36 ring. The smell is heavy, sweet and reminds me of a stable. I smoked it on the first night of the Amsterdam herf with SmokeyNL and Screwbag. I got the cigars in a trade with Bao and I was lucky enough to receive them in time for the herf.

The first flavor to hit the palate is a sweet peppery flavor with a tiny bit of leather. I could feel the cigar progress, the strength and the flavors were really building up, lots of pepper and spices, but still with a certain sweetness that prevented the cigar from becoming too powerful. The turning point comes very late.

The ash is dark and the cigar produces a lot of smoke with a good draw. I think I smoked the cigar too young, as I had to relight it often.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, it’s a great smoke to share with friends

Illusione cg:4

This Illusione cigar got a high rating at Cigar Aficionado so I was very curious about it and the looks made my curiosity grow. The wrapper is very dark with some veins and a dark natural drawing in the leaf. The aroma was a very heavy manure aroma. The predraw tasted like raisin and was a little too easy.

When I light the cigar I can taste nuts with a light sour and herbs but the sour flavor disappears soon. Halfway some leather appears with some cacao on the background soon to be replaced with the nuts I could taste earlier.

The smoke is amazing, very thick & white and the ash is firm. The draw is a little too easy and the burn was a bit crooked.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, if possible, it’s hard to find.
