La Rica Churchill

I remember smoking this cigar early in my cigar life and liking it, then I remember smoking it years later and not liking it anymore. Let’s see if this tubed Churchill makes the first category or the latter one. I tried to find some information online and only saw the cigar mentioned on Belgian and U.K. based websites, nowhere else, so I’m guessing these cigars aren’t available in the USA.

The cigars are made in Nicaragua, that I know, because it says so on the tube, Hecho a mano Nicaragua natural. And the tax ring around the cigar tells me I bought this in Belgium, most likely at Huis Verloo in Antwerp for the price of € 7,50.

The milk chocolate colored wrapper isn’t the best looking wrapper I have ever seen, to put it mildly. It has a few medium thick, unflattened veins and a color that looks just a bit off. The ring is simple, yellow and black with a abstract sun and black letters La Rica.  The construction has an even feel but the cap could look better. The aroma is quite pungent, acidic with some milk chocolate.

After cutting the cigar I taste a little sweetness and pepper with a great draw. After lighting I taste coffee, but a bit harsh. The cigar doesn’t improve, no the contrary, the cigar gets meaner. After a third I taste a harsh, mean wood with vinegar. The vinegar fades away. I still taste a mean woody flavor, but bid with some straw and a mild pepper. The flavors are getting meaner and more harsh in the last third, yet there is also a bit sweetness.

The draw is fine, the ash is dark though. The ash is medium in volume and thin. The color is gray. The burn is straight as an arrow. The cigar is medium full bodied and unfortunately medium flavored. It lasts two horrible hours.

Would I buy this cigar again? If it wasn’t for a review I would not have finished the cigar.

La Rica corona tubo

A few years ago I bought a La Rica robusto at Huis Verloo in Antwerp. Last march I went back to Antwerp for a herf and with the pleasant memory of the La Rica in mind I bought a tubo of all available sizes, including this La Rica corona. I paid a reasonable price of € 5.50

The tubo has a bright yellow color with black letters. Once I open the tubo and look at the 5¼ x 42 cigar I notice that the smooth wrapper is quite light colored. The cigar has a medium strong wood smell. The construction feels a bit tight and the predraw is a bit harder than what I like. I taste raisin and pepper.

I taste wood with a mild sweet feeling to it. The sweetness disappears after about an inch.

Halfway the wood gets accompanied by some earth and somewhat later I also taste some herbs. After ⅔ the cigar gets both sweet and spicy.

This cigar lasted me an hour. Even though the draw was hard I got enough smoke from the cigar. The burn is good and the white ash is firm. This cigar is medium bodied and medium to full flavored.

Would I buy this cigar again? No, this was a disappointment

La Rica robusto

I bought this 4 ¾ x 50Nicaraguan cigar with the Ecuadorian wrapper in a shop in Antwerp last summer. It’s packed in a nice shiny yellow tube with the words “rich full flavour” written on the outside. The wrapper is rough an manly, raw and has some veins. The aroma is light, while the construction feels good. The predraw is fine and leaves a peppery flavor in my mouth.

A nice spicy leather flavor is what I taste when I lit the cigar with some wood on the background but both the spiciness and the wood disappear soon leaving me with a nice leather flavor. Halfway some creamy chocolate joins the leather and at the end all I can taste are nutty flavors.

The draw is fine and the cigar gives me a lot of white smoke. If I smoked this at the Vatican people would think there’s a new pope elected. The ash if firm and silver gray and the burn is flawless. Full flavored like written on the tube and medium bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes if I can find them for a nice price
