Tatuaje Monster Mummy

It’s almost halloween, monster time, a yearly occurrence where grown ups dress up in scary or funny costumes, decorate their houses and where kids go trick or treat. It’s a typical American thing, thank god, although its spreading worldwide like an epidemic. And as you probably get from the intro I am not a big fan of Halloween. Here in The Netherlands we do have a similar thing called Carnaval, but again thank god, not in the area where I live but in the south of the country people dress up in weird costumes and get hammered for 5 days in a row, hold parades, cheat on their significant others and contract STD’s every year late winter and I hate it. Been there once to participate and didn’t like it at all. How about the kids you might ask? Well, on the 11th of the 11th, we call that Sint Maarten, they go trick or treat with little lanterns, singing songs and I love that.

But I found a good use for Halloween this year, since its about monsters I broke the seal on my Tatuaje Mummy, that’s the 2012 Monster Series version. I didn’t have the dress box, it comes from a plain box and it was the first year the Monster cigars officially made it to Europe, plain boxes only though. The only time a dress box made it to Europe was the Jekyll, the Tatuaje Monster of 2014 and we have only seen the 2012, 2013 and 2014 versions on the European market. This 7 3/4×47 long cigar is a Nicaraguan puro with a sun grown criollo wrapper and the blend is based on the Tatuaje Black Label, which is a cigar I love.

When I release the cigar from the cellophane wrapper I notice the closed foot and the brittle feel of the wrapper. The wrapper has a nice darkness to it and is rustic at the bottom half, the top half is more smooth and has a mild oily shine. The construction feels very good. The aroma is strong, a deep and dark manure smell. Then we come to the ring, Tatuaje always has very simple, slim rings and this cigar isn’t an exemption to the rule. Its gray with white lettering, the cursive Tatuaje as seen on all Tatuaje rings with thick letters MONSTER and HALLOWEEN on each side and the PHJ logo on the back of the ring.

I punched the cigar. The cold draw is great, the right amount or resistance in air flow. I taste a medium strong pepper with a little lemon edge. I lit the cigar with a soft flame and I taste coffee, pepper and lemon with a little sugar like sweetness. The pepper slowly gets stronger. After an inch it’s all pepper with a lemon aftertaste but it’s not a super strong and overpowering pepper. After a third the peper does get that strong but with some cedar and a hint of cinnamon as a base flavor. The aftertaste is still a little lemon like acidic. Halfway the pepper mellows out a bit and the woody and cinnamon background gets more predominant. In the aftertaste I now get a little freshness. After two thirds i taste some nuts too, pecan and macadamia, with the pepper, a little lemon and the freshness.

The draw is perfect and the white smoke is thick and plentiful, like the Vatican when a new pope is elected. The ash is light gray with dark smears, dense and firm. The burn is almost straight. The cigar is medium full bodied and full flavored. The smoke time is a little short for a long cigar, only an hour and a half.

Would I buy this cigar again? It was a limited edition from 2012 so that would be impossible. The cigar lost some points on esthetics but flavor wise I loved it.

Score: 88

Tatuaje Monster Series Mummy

This is an old review that somehow never got posted when it should have been uploaded.

In 2012 the Tatuaje Monster series finally made it to Europe. Well, only to The Netherlands and only 50 of the plain boxes. These 7¾x47 Churchills are made by My Father cigars.
tatuajehaloween1_zpsa3e799d9
The ring is simple and the cigar has a closed foot, something I always like. I don’t see a lot of veins. The construction feels good, and the cigar has a silky feel to it. The aroma is strong and reminds me of horses. The cold draw is easy and mild spicy
tatuajehaloween2_zpsd2a90ca2
The herbal, pepper and nutmeg flavors that I taste are strong and spicy on a layer of earthy flavors, more a muddy flavor. After half an inch the mud changes into a pleasant metallic flavor with spicy herbs.
tatuajehaloween3_zps9c8b5372
Slowly the cigar gets more herbal with a little licorice on the background. The flavors are very dry. Halfway I taste some nutmeg again with some hazelnut and cinnamon. Slowly some pepper shows up too. After two thirds is dry herbs again but now with the nutmeg and cinnamon.
tatuajehaloween4_zps0d88cb34
This cigar lasted me an hour and forty minutes. The draw is fine and the amount and thickness of the smoke are good too. The light ash is reasonably firm. The burn is straight. This was a cigar with an unusual flavor profile.

Tatuaje Pudgy Monster Drac

After the success of the little monster serie sampler Pete Johnson decided to release another sampler with the six first Tatuaje Monster releases in a shorter size but with the original ring gauge, the Tatuaje Pudgy Monsters with an added new release Chucky and Tiff. I will be reviewing the complete sampler in the next few weeks.
101616tatuajepudgy
The second cigar from the sampler is the Pudgy Monster Drac, a 5×52 torpedo with a shiny dark wrapper. The cigar is made from Nicaraguan tobacco topped with an Ecuadorean Habano Maduro wrapper. The aroma reminds me of a barnyard and the construction feels great. The cold draw is great and a bit peppery.
102316pudgydrac1
First flavor I taste is coffee with pepper. It changes to wood with a little sweetness and a little red pepper on my tongue.
102316pudgydrac2
Halfway I taste wood, the sweetness is gone and the pepper changed into white pepper.
102316pudgydrac3
The smoke is white, thick and plentiful. The draw is great, not too tight and not too loose. The ash is nice silver gray and firm. The burn was a tiny bit crooked at the start but corrected itself. The cigar isn’t very dynamic but still flavorful and the smoke time is about 75 minutes.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, if that was possible.

Tatuaje Pudgy Monster Frank

After the success of the little monster serie sampler Pete Johnson decided to release another sampler with the six first Tatuaje Monster releases in a shorter size but with the original ring gauge, the Tatuaje Pudgy Monsters with an added new release Chucky and Tiff. I will be reviewing the complete sampler in the next few weeks.
101616tatuajepudgy
The box pressed pudgy Frank measures 5⅝x49. The cigar is quite dark with a beautiful triple cap and the recognizable Tatuaje band in green & black. The wrapper feels silky and the cigar has a pretty strong  barnyard aroma. The construction feels good and the cold draw is great. I taste dry tobacco with some pepper.
101616tatuajepudgyfrank1
I taste coffee with pepper. Soon after the coffee is gone and I taste toast, wood and some herbs. After an inch the wood is gone and I taste some sweetness instead.
101616tatuajepudgyfrank2
After a third i also taste a little mint, which makes the cigar taste a little fresh on a bed of toast and herbs with spice in the back of my throat. After two thirds I taste more pepper with wood and herbs. The pepper grows toward the end.
101616tatuajepudgyfrank3
The smoke is thick and white. The ash is white, firm and dense. The burn is sharp. This cigar is medium full and full flavored. The smoke time is about 90 minutes.

Would I buy this cigar again? I have another sampler in my possession.

Tatuaje Little Monsters Mini Mum

In 2008 Tatuaje started with a yearly tradition, the monster series, to be release around Halloween. It all stated with the Frank named after Frankenstein, 2009 was the Drac after Dracula, then the face after leatherface from the Texas chainsaw massacre. 2011 honored the movie the wolf man and 2012 gave us the mummy. 2013 was the year of Jason Voorhees with the JV13, then came Jekyll to be followed by the Hyde.

In the mean time Tatuaje released a box of Tatuaje little monsters, miniature versions of the first 5 editions and the pudgy monsters, smaller versions of the monsters bit with the original ring gauge of the first 6 years and an added bonus of chucky and his bride. For the next few weeks I’ll be reviewing the little and pudgy monsters and some of the Tatuaje monsters that are left in my collection. I started a few weeks ago with the little monsters in chronological order, so now it’s time for the Mini mum, the last of the little monsters.
100916tatuajemonsterminimum1
As my followers know, I’m a fan of the thinner ring gauge, and this mini mum is right up my alley. A corona sized medium brown cigar with a simple gray and white band. The wrapper has a few thin veins and the cold draw is fine with a little minty flavor. The cigar has a strong barnyard aroma.
100916tatuajemonsterminimum2
The flavors are full, fresh and spicy at the same time. Fresh as in mint like. The freshness disappears quickly. After half an inch the cigar gets a little more herbal.
100916tatuajemonsterminimum3
After a third I taste the herbs with a little bit of pepper, jalapeño. But there is also some sugar like sweetness with each draw. Halfway the pepper disappears, now I taste wood and herbs. Near the end I also taste licorice.
100916tatuajemonsterminimum4
The draw is great, just like the burn. The smoke is medium and the ash is a little flaky. Smoke is getting thicker halfway.
100916tatuajemonsterminimum5
Would I buy this cigar again? This is the best little monster. If it was for sale outside the sampler I would. I nubbed the cigar for an hour and a half

Tatuaje Little Monsters Wolfie

I started a few weeks ago with the little monsters in chronological order, so now it’s time for the Wolfie, cigar number 4.
100216tatuajemonsterwolfie1
A pretty belicoso, with the well known, simple and thin Tatuaje band, with red letters this time. Construction feels good and the cigar has a strong barnyard aroma. I cut it very small but the draw is still great. I taste raisin and tobacco.
100216tatuajemonsterwolfie2
Coffee, that’s what I taste straight from the start. After a few puffs I also taste some dark chocolate. After an inch the cigar gets spicy and peppery. After a third it’s a mild bitter and red pepper flavor profile. It burns on my lips, but on the background I can taste some chocolate again. The last part is just mean and bitter.
100216tatuajemonsterwolfie3
The smoke isn’t very thick or plentiful but it’s not thin either, nice medium medium. The ash is dense and light gray. The draw is fantastic, the burn is even. The cigar is full bodied and medium flavored. Smoking time is about 75 minutes.
100216tatuajemonsterwolfie4
Would I buy this cigar again? No, this little monster isn’t as good as the real deal.

Tatuaje Little Monsters Baby Face

I started last week with the little monsters in chronological order, so cigar three is the baby face.
092516tatuajemonsterbabyface1
This petit robusto stands out because of the band, or lack of band as you can see. The band is a piece of light colored tobacco that stands out to the dark wrapper. The foot is closed. The cigar has a nice barnyard smell, best smelling little monster so far. The cold draw is good and a little spicy.
092516tatuajemonsterbabyface2
A little bit of red pepper and dry leaves, this cigar tastes like autumn. I also taste spices, but all remind me of autumn. After half an inch there is also a caramel like sweetness.
After a third it’s still spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, still very autumn that fits the weather today. There’s also a little black pepper on the background with some lemon sest.
The caramel changes to refined sugar but very mild. The rest of the flavor remain the same.
092516tatuajemonsterbabyface3
The smoke is medium full and the silver gray ash is a bit flaky. The draw is flawless. The ash is firm. The smoke time of this short cigar was about 45 minutes,

Would I buy this cigar again? The little monsters are getting better, can’t wait for the next one.

Tatuaje Little Monsters Frank Jr.

In 2008 Tatuaje started with a yearly tradition, the monster series, to be release around Halloween. For the next few weeks I’ll be reviewing the little and pudgy monsters and some of the Tatuaje monsters that are left in my collection. I’m starting with the little monsters in chronological order so today it’s the Frank Jr.
091116tatuajemonsterfrankjr1
A nice dark corona with some tooth and veins, without a band it could easily been mistaken for a Padron stick. Construction feels good and I smell a little bit of hay. The pre draw is fine with a little harsh taste of good tobacco. Time to grab my trusted Ronson varaflame from the late 60’s and light this puppy up.

First flavored are sharp, herbal with the bitterness of dark chocolate but without the chocolate flavor and a bit soapy. This is nothing like I remember from the original Frank. The soapy flavor is dominant with some herbal and peppery flavors on the background.
091116tatuajemonsterfrankjr2
After a third the soap turns into spicy green herbs and mint, an improvement. The red pepper grows too, I can taste it on the tip of my tongue. In the aftertaste there is a mild dark chocolate taste. The cigar is very enjoyable now.

Halfway the pepper changes from red to wblack and the chocolate gets a bit stronger. Unfortunately there is a little hint of that soapy flavor on the background again. Near the end the cigar gets bitter.
091116tatuajemonsterfrankjr3
The draw is great and from the first moment I get a lot of thick white smoke. The ash is dark and flaky. It also breaks easily . The burn is straight, no complaints here. The smoke time was an hour.

Would I buy this cigar again? No. Even if it was possible still no because of the soapy flavor.

Tatuaje Boris

Thanks to two American friends I got my hands on two of the hard to get and hyped up Tatuaje Dracula and Tatuaje Boris. I smoked the Drac before and liked it a lot, so my expectations for this Boris were very high. Almost every review I read on this Boris was positive too, so I couldn’t wait to light it but I forced myself to wait a while, as I knew that it would be next to impossible to get another stick if I liked it. The moment that I couldn’t wait any longer arrived, last night I decided it was time to light this special stick. From what I’ve been told, this Boris is last year’s Tatuaje Frank but out of costume. I can’t tell as I haven’t smoked the Frank yet.
100808tatuajeboris1
The oily wrapper is a little messy with lots of veins. The Ecuadorian Sumatra Rosado gives the cigar a nice reddish glow. The cigar has a bit of a sour, ammonia like, barnyard smell. I feel some soft spots in the construction but the predraw gives the right amount of resistance. I can taste cedar and raisin with a peppery aftertaste.
100808tatuajeboris2
I get a full earth and coffee flavor and a very very mild chocolate. I also get some freshness from the cigar, I don’t know exactly what kind of freshness, it is not minty and the flavor is a bit hidden. The chocolate gains some power and after an inch the freshness become a bit stronger too. I get a dry feeling in my mouth. After ⅓ I taste cedar with the mild chocolate and the fresh aftertaste.
100808tatuajeboris3
The chocolate joins the freshness in the aftertaste, and halfway the cigar I also taste some herbs on the background. After ⅔ the herbal flavors are the main flavor, they pushed the cedar away completely. There is a hint of chocolate with the freshness on the background and in the aftertaste, but the chocolate starts fading away until I can’t taste it anymore.
100808tatuajeboris4
The smoke time of this 7×49 cigar is one hour and forty five minutes. I had to correct the burn a few times but the draw was good. I got a lot of smoke from the cigar. The firm ash is light colored, almost silvery gray. To me this cigar was medium to full flavored and medium bodied.
100808tatuajeboris5
Would I buy this cigar again? No. This cigar is almost impossible to get, and I liked the Drac better.
