Hoyo de Monterrey petit robusto *revisited*

3 years ago I reviewed this 4×50 Hoyo de Monterrey petit robusto but forgot to take pictures. This is my first Hoyo de Monterrey petit robusto since, I bought it to update my old review with pictures and decided to review the new cigar too.

The wrapper is silky, somewhat dark and it has quite some veins. The cigar smells of leather and barnyard. The construction feels good and the predraw is fine. I can hardly taste anything in the predraw. The cigar has a € 8.40 price tag in The Netherlands
071106hoyodemonterreypetitrobusto2
I taste peppery leather and coffee, quite full and strong and after half an inch the pepper disappears and the leather becomes mild sweet. Soon after the cigar flavors change to an earthy flavor with some leather and quite some herbs on the background with some pepper.
071106hoyodemonterreypetitrobusto4
Halfway the leather disappears, I taste an earthy flavor with herbs. After two thirds the sweetness returns with the herbs and some leather. The earthy flavor has gone. Near the end I even taste a licorice like flavor.

It took me an hour to finish this short stogie. I got a lot of smoke which was reasonably thick. The silver-gray ash is firm. The draw is great but I had to correct the burn a few times. This cigar is full flavored and medium bodied.

Tatuaje T110

I guess we all know the story about the Tatuaje T110. Only 400 boxes of 25 were made for a cigarshop on Hawaii, and they became an instant hit. This cigar was high on my to try list, maybe because of the hype, but also because I like Tatuaje and love to try rare smokes. Mario Golbee got me one in a NC MAW on cigar asylum and some time later I was able to buy a fiver from a botl on the same board. A day after I bought the fiver I got an email from Marvin, owner of the mentioned cigar shop, that I could buy a box if I wanted too and there was no way I would pass on that offer. To keep the karma going I decided to split that box with my buddy SmokeyNL, I know he’s a Tatuaje whore and didn’t have the opportunity to get his hands on these.

The dark wrapper is nice and oily with a few minor veins. The band is nice and simple. The construction feels good and the predraw, that has the right amount of assistance, tastes mild peppery. The cigar smells like a barnyard with some acidic smell to it.
101107tatuajet1102
I taste a nice coffee flavor, quite a full flavor but not too strong, and soon I get some herbs too. The feeling in my mouth is quite dry.
101107tatuajet1103
After an inch and a half I can still taste the coffee and the herbs and far on the background I can also taste a hint of chocolate
101107tatuajet1104
The chocolate disappears and the herbs become the dominant flavor. The coffee is nothing more as a supporting flavor and the aftertaste is herbal too.
101107tatuajet1105
During the 75 minutes I enjoyed this cigar I got a nice amount of smoke that is medium thick. The firm ash is light colored, almost white. The draw is fine and the burn is fantastic. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? That will be close to impossible, and I don’t think I would if I had the opportunity. But it is nice to have smoked something that is so in demand and hard to get.

Ramon Allones Lusitano RE Portugal 2010

In 2008 the Vegas Robaina petit robusto became the first edicion regional for Portugal and two years later, in 2010, Habanos released the next Portugese edicion regional, the Ramon Allones lusitano. Again it is a short, relatively thick cigar. The Vegas Robaina was a 4×50, and this Ramon Allones is a 4.3×52 stogie, so I guess the Portugese aficionados like their cigars short and thick.

The wrapper is quite dark for a Cuban cigar and has some even darker stripes running over it. It makes the wrapper stand out. When punching the cigar I notice that the wrapper is quite thick too. The cigar has a mild barnyard aroma. The construction feels soft. The predraw is a bit on the loose side too and I taste spicy raisin.
100921ramonallones2010portugal2
I taste a mild spicy coffee flavor with earthy notes and some pepper in the aftertaste. The coffee disappears almost immediately. Far on the background I can also taste some chocolate and nuts. After half an inch I taste leather with the earty flavor and the chocolate and nuts.
100921ramonallones2010portugal3
After a third I taste more nuts and the cigar gets a bit spicy. Halfway the chocolate gains power. The nut, leather and earth flavors are background flavors now.
100921ramonallones2010portugal4
This small stick provided me pleasure for an hour and five minutes. I got a lot of smoke which was reasonably thick. The ash is dark and frayed but firm. I had to correct the burn a few times. The draw was good. This cigar is medium to full flavored and medium bodied.

My Father le bijou 1922 petit robusto

A friend gave me this My Father Le Bijou 1922 petit robusto after I told him that I didn’t care for the churchill I smoked from the same blend. He said he didn’t like the blend at all and gave me this petite robusto from his collection, as he would never smoke it.

The wrapper is nice, dark, and oily but mat. It has some veins that give the cigar character. The band is detailed but beautiful. The construction feels good. The predraw is a bit on the loose side, even though I punched it instead of using my palio. I can’t get any flavor from the predraw. The cigar is only 4½ inch long and has a 50 ring.
100729donpepingarcialebijoupetiterobusto2
Bitter coffee and a full earth flavor is what I get after lighting the cigar. The bitterness quickly disappears and after half an inch I get a hint of chocolate. After an inch the chocolate gets sweeter and the coffee and earth flavors have turned into wood.
100729donpepingarcialebijoupetiterobusto3
Halfway the sweetness disappears too and all I taste is a very nice wood flavor. Near the end that wood gets company from some herbs.
100729donpepingarcialebijoupetiterobusto4
Even though this is a small stick, it lasted me for 75 minutes. It gave me a lot of smoke. The draw is good but I had to correct the burn a few times. The light gray ash is firm. This cigar is full flavored and medium bodied.

Vegas Robaina petit robusto Portugal 2007

In 2008 Portugal got their first and until now only Edicion Regional from Habanos, a Vegas Robaina petit robusto, 4 inch long and a 50 ring gauge. 600 boxes of 25 were released and this is the only batch made.
090813vegasrobainapetitrobustoreportug-2
The dark oily wrapper is almost flawless, I haven’t seen a lot of cigars with a wrapper that smooth. The construction feels good, I don’t feel any possible plugs of soft spots. The cigar has a full barnyard aroma with a specific smell from which you can tell it’s Cuban. The aroma also contains a peppery smell. The predraw is a little bit on the loose side and feels dry.
090813vegasrobainapetitrobustoreportug-3
I taste the distinct Cuban leather in this cigar. The smoke leaves a dry feeling in my mouth, just like I got from the predraw. After a centimeter the leather is growing a bit stronger and I get something sweet and some wood that are finding their way through the leather flavor. After an inch the leather disappears and somewhat later I can taste a herbal flavor and some nuts. These flavors will stick to the end.
090813vegasrobainapetitrobustoreportugal2
The smoke is gray and quite full. The ash is dark and not very firm. I rate this cigar mild to medium bodied and medium flavored.

Would I buy this cigar again? I have a few left that I will enjoy smoking, but I don’t think I will buy more. I’m afraid that this cigar doesn’t have a lot of aging potential.

Hoyo de Monterrrey petit robusto

This nice, small Cuban has a funny appearance due to the small size of just 102mm and the 50 ring which makes it look a bit like a chopped off thumb. It has a firm feel, which usually means that the construction is good, an aroma which reminds me of a stable, a nice light oily wrapper and a sweet predraw with a light hint of raisins.
071106hoyodemonterreypetitrobusto1
First flavor is wood, combined with a soft leather, much softer than the average Cuban and later on a hint of cacao. The flavors combine perfectly and are all very creamy, soft and warm. Well constructed, perfectly balanced flavors, draw is fine. The only negative I can mention is a bit crooked burning and the medium smoke, I like smoke to be full and thick. Ash is pretty firm and very dark.
071106hoyodemonterreypetitrobusto2
Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, I liked it, don’t let the size fool you.
