Oliva Serie V diadema

Oliva, just browse my reviews and you’ll see that I love the brand (except for the Connecticut Reserve but that is because I dislike Connecticut shade with a passion) so you can imagine that I had high expectations for this 9×56 Oliva series V diadema. This is a limited edition of only 2500 sticks, just for Europe. 1000 sticks made it to The Netherlands, the other 1500 ended up on the German market.

The cigar looks fabulous, a beautiful and smooth Colorado colored wrapper with a strong and peppery barnyard smell and not a lot of veins. The construction feels great and the predraw confirms the flawless construction, I taste raisin and pepper.
130203olivale02_zpsdb873547
Straight from the start I taste a full coffee flavor with some earthiness and pepper. There is also a smoky flavor. After half an inch I taste wood, pepper and coffee. The wood slowly grows stronger and far far on the background I taste some dry, very dark, chocolate. The chocolate disappears again and all I taste is wood with herbs. The flavors are mild creamy now.
130203olivale03_zps307e82a3
After a third I taste creamy chocolate with wood. The herbs are gone, just like the pepper. Halfway I get that typical Oliva sweetness that only an Oliva cigar can produce. The wood, the sweetness, the creaminess all blend together while the pepper makes a comeback. After two thirds the pepper is strong and the cigar gets more spicy. Near the end I get wood, some herbs and a little bit of cacao.

This cigar lasted me for two hours and forty-five minutes and I loved every minute of it. The draw is amazing for a cigar this size and shape. The light gray ash is firm and the burn is fantastic too. The only negative thing I can say is that the smoke could be a tad thicker but if that is all, it is a great cigar. The flavors of the cigar are dry so I got thirsty a lot during smoking. This cigar is full bodied and full flavored.

Oliva series V #4

After last year’s success story with the Oliva V maduro short robusto Edicion Europe Oliva decided to create another European exclusive cigar and they chose a 5×43 #4 size with the Oliva V blend for us Europeans. A select group of American retailers had the opportunity to buy a limited amount of boxes too. The price is set for 5 euro a stick.

The wrapper has the colour of dark chocolate with a few veins. The cigar has a strong smell of an old wooden barn. The construction feels great and the predraw is just like I want it. I taste tobacco with chilli peppers.
111020olivav42
I taste pepper, coffee and an earthy flavour. That earthy flavour with quite some pepper on the top of my tongue is the aftertaste. On the background I taste something sugar sweet. After half an inch I taste lots of pepper with some chocolate on the background. After a third I taste pepper with terroir. The chocolate and the sweetness have disappeared. I do taste some herbs too though.
111020olivav43
Halfway I taste a little less pepper and I do get some chocolate and a little bit of nuts. Some puffs later I also taste terroir again. Near the end I taste more pepper with terroir. Even though the pepper is strong, it is not as strong as before. The nut flavour remains.
111020olivav44
This cigar lasted me an hour and fifteen minutes. The draw is great and I got a lot of thick white smoke. The ash is quite dark and medium firm. The burn is great and the cigar is full flavoured and full bodied.

Oliva series V belicoso

I reviewed this 5×54 Oliva series V belicoso about three years ago but my flavor preferences and review writing skills have changed a lot in the past three years, so it was time to revisit the cigar. When it comes to the regular Oliva lines, I prefer the Oliva series V with the Jalapo ligero and the high priming habano sun grown wrapper.

The dark and oily wrapper makes the cigar look awesome. I don’t see any real veins. The construction feels good and I smell a mild barnyard. The predraw is fine, I taste tobacco with some raisin and a little bit of pepper.

I taste a peppery earth flavor, full and strong with a lot of green pepper. After a quarter of an inch I also taste some wood on the background but everything is overpowered by the mentioned green pepper. After half an inch I still taste a lot of pepper with some wood and sweetness, the structure of the flavors is dry.

After an inch the pepper loses some strength, which is a good thing. It is still a strong flavor but not as overpowering as before. I taste a bit more sweetness and some dry wood. After a third I taste nuts, wood, some herbs and the pepper. Halfway I taste some sweet carrot with herbs and just a small amount of pepper. Soon after that I get more herbs and more sweetness, although the pepper gains some strength again.

This cigar had a smoke time of an hour and twenty minutes. The draw was good and the burn was great. I got a lot of thick smoke. The pepper and salt colored ash is firm. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes!

Oliva series V small diadema ‘Berlin’

These cigar were made especially for the opening of the Oliva Cigar Lounge in Berlin, last october, but due to a communication error more of these Oliva V Diadema with a unique size were produced than needed. The Oliva Cigar Lounge in Den Bosch managed to buy all the remaining Oliva V small diadema Berlin and sells them in bundles of 25 for € 130.00. Now I lacked the budget to buy a bundle, but a close friend did and gave me a fiver so I could try these. Another friend came by my house and the three of us smoked one, one of us got a major nicotine overdose, and no, it wasn’t me.
110224olivavdiademaberlin1
The small diadema is 5¾ inch long and that makes it smaller than the smallest Oliva V diadema, which can be found in the Oliva V sampler. The ring is the same though, 46. The habano wrapper has a nice dark color with a few thin veins. The cigar has a strong barnyard and chocolate smell. The construction feels good, and the cigar is topped with a triple cap. The predraw is a bit hard, I taste raisin and then with a delay a lot of black pepper.
110224olivavdiademaberlin2
I taste a non bitter coffee flavor with lots of black pepper and a hint of something chocolate like on the background. After an inch I taste pepper with some sweetness and cedar.
110224olivavdiademaberlin3
After a third I taste a lot less pepper, I also taste wood, dim chocolate and some herbs. The woodflavor isn’t cedar anymore but more oak. The dim chocolade flavor disappears soon. After two thirds I taste nuts with wood and pepper.
110224olivavdiademaberlin4
This cigar lasted me an hour and forty five minutes. This full flavored and full bodied cigar gave me enough smoke, although the smoke was a bit thin. The draw and the burn are good. The dark ash is quite firm. The purge gave me a really small and short flame.
110224olivavdiademaberlin5
Would I buy this cigar again? For this price, they are a steal.

Oliva series V diadema 6×46

When I met Dave Wagner, national sales manager of the Oliva Cigar Company a few months ago, he told me he always has some Oliva V 6×46 diadema cigars in his pockets as they are his favorite Oliva V’s and they are not a regular production cigar, you will only find them in the Oliva V samplers. We smoked one right on the spot and he gave me a second one for a review, a review you are reading now.
110131olivavdiadema6461
The cigar has the most beautiful shape, I think that the diadema is the best looking cigar shape out there. I smell the cigar and when I close my eyes I can even see the horses I smell, it’s like I’m in a stable. The construction feels great and the cigar looks awesome with the dark, shiny and oily wrapper. I see a few thing long veins. Dave told me he never punches or cuts a cigar, he pinches the cap and because he gave me this cigar, I pinched the cap too, it worked well. The predraw is fine.
110131olivavdiadema6462
I taste some earth flavors with pepper and some mild sweet wood. After half an inch the cigar taste like herbs with wood, quite spicy. After an inch I taste wood as main flavor with herbs in the aftertaste, the cigar is mild peppery. The cigar lacks the Oliva V power and pepper but that makes it special and very enjoyable.
110131olivavdiadema6463
Halfway the pepper disappeared and I taste herbs with wood. The herbs took over as main flavor again. The wood slowly disappears completely and after two thirds all I taste are herbs with some cinnamon, which I love. I also taste some chocolate on the background. The chocolate slowly grows in strength and turns into dark chocolate. The cigar also gets a little bit spicy.
110131olivavdiadema6464
This cigar was good for an hour and thirty five minutes. The draw is great, the smoke is plenty but a bit thin. The ash is quite dark and quite firm. The burn is beautiful. This cigar is medium to full flavored and medium bodied.

Would I buy this cigar again? That would be impossible without buying a whole sampler

Oliva series V figurado

The V series is the flagship of the Oliva Cigar Company and comes in several sizes. I reviewed a few in the past, like the 2008 V Maduro, the 2009 V Maduro, the Churchill, the Lancero and the Torpedo. The V series are Nicaraguan puros with tobacco from ligero tobacco from the Jalapa valley with a high priming Habano sun grown wrapper.
101204olivavfigurado1
This figurado is the oddest shaped cigar in the series, it’s 6½ inch long and at the thickest point the cigar has a 60 ring. The wrapper is smooth, shiny, dark and oily with a few pretty veins. The construction feels good and the predraw, that is quite peppery, is fine too.
101204olivavfigurado2
I taste pepper and wood, mainly pepper but after ¾ inch the pepper loses much of its power and I taste some chocolate too. These flavors don’t change for the first third.
101204olivavfigurado3
The cigar gains some power and I also get some sweetness that I expect to taste in every Oliva cigar. The pepper makes a comeback and becomes stronger. After two thirds a herbal flavor joins the party in my mouth.
101204olivavfigurado4
This cigar lasted me for two hours. I get a decent amount of smoke, but it is a bit thin. The ash is dark but firm, so firm that you can see the tip of the cigar in the ash. The burn is awesome and the draw is good. This cigar is medium to full flavored and definitely full bodied.

Oliva serie V maduro short robusto edicion Europe

Finally, a limited edition especially for Europe. It always seemed that the big manufacturers outside Cuba didn’t care for Europe at all, but Oliva invested in relationships with the European retailers and cigar aficionados for years, making them one of the best known and selling non Cuban cigars in Europe. To enhance that relationship they released an Oliva V maduro short robusto ‘edicion Europe’, a 4½x50 short robusto that will be sold in Europe only. 1500 boxes of 10 were manufactured and I was lucky enough to get an invitation to the release party in the beautiful restaurant The Hunting Lodge in Rozendaal, The Netherlands with Dave Wagner and Brian Shapiro from Oliva and Sasja van Horssen of the Oliva Cigar Lounge in Den Bosch.

The Oliva V short robusto Edicion Europe is the same blend as the regular Oliva V maduro releases but with a Mexican San Andreas maduro wrapper instead of the Nicaraguan maduro wrapper that was used for the Oliva V maduro torpedo releases from 2008 and 2009. The wrapper is dark with quite some veins and oily. The cigar has a warm horse stable smell and a triple cap. The wrapper is quite thick, something I noticed while punching the cap. The construction is good, just like the raisin flavored predraw. The cigar is quite short but has the same size bands as the other Oliva V cigars, which almost covers half this short robusto.

I taste herbs with some coffee and an earthy flavor. The flavors are full but not too strong and I even taste some mild chocolate which slowly grows stronger. The coffee and earthy flavor fade away after half an inch, after that I taste herbs with chocolate.

The flavors are dry while the chocolate and herbs keep changing as main flavor. The chocolate slowly turns into dark chocolate and even stronger, the herbs fade to the background. Halfway the cigar gets spicy too. Those flavors stick with me till the end, when the cigar also gets minty fresh.

This is a short robusto, but I managed to make it last and hour and twenty five minutes. The smoke is thick and plenty. The draw is great, the burn is good too. The ash is medium dark gray and firm. This cigar is full bodied and full flavored.

Would I buy this cigar again? You bet I will, already have a box but I want more, best Oliva cigar I have smoked so far.

Oliva series V diadema ‘Den Bosch’

I can imagine that some of you might think “what the hell is Den Bosch and why is there a limited edition cigar for that Den Bosch thing” but let me explain. Den Bosch aka ‘S Hertogenbosch is a city in the south of the Netherlands and it’s the place where the first European Oliva Cigar Lounge is located (a new one will be opened in Berlin on October 31, 2010). The shop is owned by the same owner as The Longfiller Company, the European distributer for Oliva, and that’s why there is a limited edition Oliva V Diadema ‘Den Bosch’. This is an extremely limited release cigar, only 500 cigars, 50 boxes of 10 in a 7×48 size, different than the diadema’s you’ll find in the Oliva samplers. The boxes are sold exclusively in the Oliva Cigar Lounge in Den Bosch. The release party, with Brian Shapiro and Dave Wagner from Oliva, was last week and I can only imagine that there are just a few boxes left. The price of a box is € 85.00, which makes a single cigar € 8.50
100928olivavdenbosch1
The wrapper is dark, oily and shiny, it looks great. The cigar has a strong horse stable smell and a good construction. What strikes me is that the cigar doesn’t have an extra band like most limited editions have. The predraw is great and I taste raisin.
100928olivavdenbosch2
I taste some earthy flavors and wood. No pepper like I expected from an Oliva V. This cigar is even mild sweet and I think I taste some nuts too. The feeling in my mouth is quite dry. The sweetness slowly grows in strength. A few puffs later the cigar finally gets the well known Oliva V spice and the nut flavor gets stronger too. After an inch this cigar is like I expected, the classic Oliva V combo of herbs, with pepper, spicy and mild sweet. I taste a nutty aftertaste.
100928olivavdenbosch3
Halfway the pepper fades away a bit and I still taste spicy herbs with nuts and an earthy flavor. In the aftertaste I discover some chocolate. After two thirds I taste sweet herbs with some macadamia nuts. The chocolate has gone. At the end I get a strong earthy flavor.
100928olivavdenbosch4
The smoke time of this cigar is an hour and thirty-five minutes. The draw was great and the burn was phenomenal. Straight as an arrow and slow. The smoke is good, a decent amount and thick although it started out thin. The reasonable dark ash isn’t firm, it dropped on my shirt twice. This cigar is full flavored and full bodied.
100928olivavdenbosch5
Would I buy this cigar again? I got myself a box before they are gone. This is a limited production, so when my box is empty I won’t be able to get them anymore.
